Asbestos is found in thousands of products, including many
building materials. Building materials that most likely have asbestos in them
are fire proofing materials and heat & cold insulation.
Sprayed-on ceiling insulation
Pipe and boiler insulation
Duct insulation
Floor and ceiling tiles
Sprayed-on asbestos insulation is usually
fluffy material sprayed onto ceilings or beams; sometimes it is covered by
ceiling tiles.
Asbestos pipe and boiler
insulation may be covered with paper, cloth, or metal. The insulation
can be cardboard-like pipe wrap, or cement on pipe elbows.
Asbestos duct insulation is usually
a thin layer of insulation that may be painted or covered with paper, cloth, or
metal.
Asbestos floor and ceiling tile are very
similar to non-asbestos tile. Asbestos floor tile is often vinyl asbestos tile (VAT)
and 9 inches square, however, not all 9x9 floor tiles contain
asbestos. Ceiling tile is sometimes used for sound insulation or
dropped ceilings.
